Funded by: Bolton’s Fund
Purpose:
This project was introduced to support households on low incomes who were struggling to top up their gas and electricity prepayment meters during the coldest part of the year. Many families on prepayment plans are at risk of self-disconnection, particularly during the winter months when energy use is at its highest. The aim was to reduce fuel poverty and help residents keep their homes warm and safe.
What We Provided:
Eligible applicants received prepaid energy vouchers to use towards gas and electricity top-ups. Support was exclusively available to households using prepayment meters, who often face higher tariffs and limited flexibility when in financial difficulty.
How It Worked:
Applications were submitted online, and supporting evidence of financial need and prepayment meter usage was required. We also accepted referrals from welfare professionals, housing workers and community partners.
Impact & Benefits:
- 44 vulnerable families supported across Bolton
- Helped prevent disconnection during freezing winter months
- Reduced stress and financial pressure for households already facing hardship
- Supported families with children, elderly residents and those with long-term health conditions
- Enabled safer living environments through access to consistent heating and power
- Strengthened local referral networks through targeted, time-sensitive delivery
This project forms part of our wider response to the cost-of-living crisis and reflects our commitment to addressing practical household needs beyond food support.
